Both Medicaid Advantage Plus and the Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly enable dual-eligible beneficiaries in the NY Medicaid MLTC Program to receive all of their benefits through a single plan. We had a nice visit at The Vintage Retirement Community but it had too much of an institutional feel for us. I liked the fact that the independent living apts had more of a kitchen than most communities and they offered very flexible meal plans. My mom has lived here for 4 years, and the level of attention, quality of food, availability of activities, assistance with needed medical appliances or products is non-existent, and staff interaction has declined dramatically. Very disappointed in this change, and my mom is increasingly unhappy here.
The hallways leading to the apartments were narrow. The two apartments we toured were ok, but there was a dead roach in the shower of one of them. The dining area for independent seniors was cafeteria style requiring the residents to fumble with a tray for dining. The 6th floor for assisted living residents had a dining room with wait staff for the residents, but we found that to be cramped and depressing. Obviously, none of us liked this place and there was 5 of us touring.

It’s a place that I’d want to be if I needed service. We’ve had a very good experience with this community. We have only been here a little over a month and already feel right at home. It is so convenient to have access to the library, hair salon and work out room.

If the applicant’s spouse, minor child, or blind or disabled child of any age lives there, the home is exempt regardless of the applicant’s home equity interest, and regardless of where the applicant lives. DAB Medicaid offers a variety of long term care benefits and services, but the beneficiary qualifies for these benefits and services one at a time. That’s different from Nursing Home Medicaid, which makes all of its services immediately available for anyone who qualifies. This can work for DAB Medicaid recipients because they are not all required to need a Nursing Facility Level of Care to qualify, unlike Nursing Home Medicaid and Home and Community Based Service Waiver recipients. However, DAB Medicaid recipients in New York are required to need help with Activities of Daily Living to be eligible for certain long term care benefits. Vintage seemed well-organized and clean, but it seemed more like the employees where there for their paycheck and to practice whatever occupation they had but not endearing to the residents.
